Day 1: Arrive Paro International Airport. Afternoon, visit the ruined Drukgyel Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang. Enjoy the spectacular view of mount Jomulhari "Mountain of the Goddess". Evening leisurely stroll around the Paro town and overnight at hotel. Day 2: Excursion to Taktsang. Morning drive to Taktsang Monastery, meaning "Tiger’s Nest" situated on the rock with height of 900 mtrs from the ground level overlooking the Paro valley. Afternoon, visit National museum where Bhutanese artifacts are displayed and Rimpung Dzong built in 1645 by Zhabdrung Rimpoche, the founder of Bhutan. Day 3: Paro – Thimphu. On arrival in Thimphu, visit the Memorial Chorten and Textile Factory. Spend rest of the day at your leisure in the city, which is just so different from rest of the cities that I have ever visited in my entire foreign trips. It is just so beautiful and very traditional in looking. Overnight at hotel in Thimphu. Day 4: Thimphu Sightseeing. Visit Changangkha Lhakhang, Takin preservation and Sangaygang for spectacular views of magical city of capital. The National Library, where a vast collection of ancient manuscripts are preserved, the Traditional Institute for Zorig Chusum (the 13 arts & crafts) and Institute of Traditional Medicines. Lunch at the hotel. Afternoon, drive up to Dechencholing and visit Pangrizampa Monastery. Over night at hotel in Thimphu. Day 5: Thimphu – Punakha (3 ½ hrs). Morning drive to Punakha. On route visit Traditional Paper Factory and drop at Dochula Pass (3080mtrs) for a hot cup of tea / coffee. Enjoy the most spectacular view of the Eastern Himalayan mountain ranges. Enroute visit Chime Lhakhang (temple of fertility) built on a spectacular site in 1499 by Ngawang Chogyel. After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong, the old capital of Bhutan. Take a drive along the upstream river valley. One can see the white bellied heron (globally an endanger bird species) along the river valleys. Take a short walk to Khamsum Yullley temple built on a hillock overlooking the valley. Overnight at hotel in Punakha. Day 6: Punakha – Phobjikha Valley (4 hrs). After breakfast drive to Phobjikha via Wangdiphodrang Dzong built in 1938 and its small town is perched on a hill between two rivers. Continue drive to gracious valley of Phobjikha. During winters, we can also see the famous Black Necked Cranes there. Visit the Nyingma Institute and the Gangtey monastery at Gangtey Goenpa. Afternoon visit crane centre and carpet factory. Overnight at resort in Phobjikha. Day 7: Phobjikha – Bumthang (6 hrs). Morning before breakfast, you can stroll through nature trail for 2-3 hrs. After breakfast proceeds towards Trongsa. Lunch at Trongsa. Afternoon, visit the Trongsa Dzong and the Watch Tower. The Trongsa Dzong was the ancestral home of the ruling dynasty. It was built in 1643 by Chogyel Minjur Tempa. The Ta-Dzong, an ancient Watch Tower of the Trongsa Dzong is located on top of a steep hill over looking Trongsa Dzong. The watchtower displays many interesting armors used by the Bhutanese soldiers during the olden days. Soon after, drive to Bumthang “the land of Switzerland in Bhutan” where tales of the great teacher Guru Rimpoche dominates. Overnight at hotel in Bumthang. Day 8: Bumthang Sightseeing. Visit the historical Jakar Dzong built by Minjur Tempa, the third Druk Desi (Temporal ruler) in 1646. It was later repaired and expanded by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay, the fourth Desi of Bhutan in 1683. It is probably one of the biggest Dzongs in Bhutan with the surrounding walls about 1 km in circumference and Wangdue Chholing palace. Visit several ancient and important monasteries such as, Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang, Kencho Sum Lhakhang, Tamshing and Pema Samba Lhakhangs. Overnight at hotel in Bumthang. Day 9: Bumthang – Mongar (6 hrs). Early morning begin your journey to the East fascinating Ura valley, one of the most beautiful. Out of Ura, the highway climbs steeply to Thrumshing La pass at 3800 mtrs along the West to East highway. The descent from Thrumshing La to Lingmethang is amazing for a number of reasons. The road drops from 3800 meters to 650 meters in only a few hours passing from pine forest through semi-tropical forest to orange groves. Arriving at Mongar marks the beginning of your eastern Bhutan experience. On arrival at Mongar, attend festival at courtyard of Mongar Dzong. Overnight at hotel in Mongar. Day 10: Mongar Festival. Religious festivals known as 'Tsechus' symbolizing amity, peace and compassion, are held annually at various parts of the kingdom at different times of the year. These vibrant festivals are a time for the people to come together decent in all their ceremonial dress. During the festival, rare and sacred masked dances, sword dances and many rituals are performed. Evening, take a walk to Killikhar monastery houses for Buddhist Institute and stroll through the Mongar for your leisure. Overnight at hotel in Mongar. Day 11: Mongar – Trashigang. Morning, begin your trip to Trashigang across Korila pass at 2400 mtrs passing through several villages. Enroute visit Drametse monastery just 18km from road head to Mongar. This monastery is historically important and unique as houses for the Married Nyingma monks (laymen). Ani Chhoten Zangmo, the great-grand daughter of Pema Lingpa and her husband, Yeshi Gyalpo founded the Monastery in 1511 and named the place as Drametse, meaning “the peak where there is no enemy”. On arrival, attend the festival in courtyard of Trashigang Dzong and stroll around the town, absorbing the culture of eastern Bhutan. Overnight at hotel in Trashigang. Day 12: Trashigang Tsechu. After breakfast, attend the festival. During Tsechu, the dances are performed by monks as well as by laymen. The Tsechu is a religious festival and by attending it, it is believed one gains merits. It is also a yearly social gathering, where the people dressed in all their finery, come together to rejoice. Day 13: Trashigang – Samdrup Jungkhar. Drive to Samdrup Jungkhar. On route, visit Kanglung Zangdopelri & textile weaving at Khaling. Lunch on route. Overnight at hotel in Samdrup Jungkhar. Day 14: Samdrup Jongkhar - Guwahati – Bangkok. Morning drive to Guwahati for your onward flight to Bangkok. |
