National Symbols
National Flag national_flag.pngThe national flag of Bhutan is diagonally segmented and depicts a white dragon across the middle. The upper part with golden yellow representing the secular power of king and the lower part orange is symbolizing the Buddhist influence. The white colour of dragon is associated with purity & represents Bhutan. The jewels held in its claws stand for the wealth and perfection of the country.

National Emblem 
The national emblem contained in a circle, is composed of a diamond thunderbolt placed above a lotus, surmounted by a jewel and framed by two dragons. The double diamond thunderbolt represents the harmony between secular and religious power, which results from the Buddhist religion in its Vajrayana form. The lotus signifies purity; the jewel – sovereign power and the two dragons – a male & female stands for the name of the country “Druk Yul, the land of thunder dragon”.  

National Day
Bhutan celebrates the national day on 17 December and commemorates the ascension to the throne of Ugyen Wangchuk, the first hereditary Monarchy of Bhutan at Punakha Dzong on 17 December 1907.

National Tree 

Bhutan’s national tree is cypress (Cupressus torolusa) which is often associated with religious places. It is straight and strong and can grow in inhospitable soil.

National Bird
Bhutan’s national bird is the raven (Corvas corax) and it adorns the royal hat. It signifies the deity Gonpo Jarodongchen (Mahakhala with a raven’s hat), one of the most important guardian deities of Bhutan.

The mythical animal Takin (Burocas taxicolor) is the national animal of Bhutan. Its endanger species mammal of the ovine-family. It lives in flocks in places above 4000mtrs and eats bamboo. Its directly associated with Buddhist mythical.

The blue poppy (Meconopsis grandis), delicate blue/purple tinged bloom with a white filament. It is a monocarpic, meaning blooms only once and then dying. Poppies bloom from May to July and it grows at high altitude with an elevation of 4000mtrs & above.
